Women's Basketball Team Defeats John Carroll, 67-52, in University Heights

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore guard/forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a team-high 15 points as the Baldwin-Wallace women's basketball team defeated John Carroll, 67-52, tonight (Wednesday, January 14, 2009) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights.  B-W did not trail throughout the game en route to its sixth straight victory.
 
Media and fans are reminded that tonight's B-W versus JCU women's game will be televised on a delayed basis by SportsTime Ohio (www.sportstimeohio.com). Air times are at 12:00 noon on Thursday, Jan. 15 and Friday, Jan. 16 at 5:00 a.m.
 
In addition to Schroeder for the Yellow Jackets, junior ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy) scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) came off the bench to add 10 points.  John Carroll was led by senior guard Rachael Price with a game high 17 points points.
 
With its win, B-W improves to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. With its loss, JCU is now 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead when senior Academic All-OAC point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) scored on a layup at 18:23.  B-W extended its lead to five points at 11-6 at the 15:18 mark when sophomore guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) canned one-of-two free throws.
 
John Carroll then went on a 7-2 run and tied the score at 13-13 when junior forward Laura Gruber hit a layup with 13:22 left.  After another tie at 15-15, the Yellow Jackets held John Carroll without a field goal until the 1:22 mark.  Over that span, the Brown and Gold went on a 22-1 run and never looked back when junior forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Marion Steele) canned a jump shot in the lane to make the score 37-16 at the 1:42 mark.  B-W also led 41-21 at halftime.
 
In the second half, B-W extended its lead to a game-high 25 at the 10:07 mark when Schroeder made a layup to give B-W a 55-30 advantage.  John Carroll outscored B-W 22-9 to cut the Jacket lead to 12 points on two separate occasions, with the last coming at 64-52 when Price made a layup with :56 left to cap the scoring for JCU.  B-W iced the game with three consecutive free throws.
 
Keys to the game for B-W included outrebounding the Blue Streaks 49-35, including grabbing 33 of JCU's 43 missed field goals.  The Yellow Jackets also limited themselves to just 11 turnovers, while forcing 17 John Carroll miscues.
 
The Yellow Jacket women return to action this Saturday, January 17 when they host OAC-rival Marietta College in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.  That game also will be televised by STO at both 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Jan. 17 and again on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2:00 p.m. In addition, B-W's February 14 home game versus Muskingum College is a TV game.
 
All women's basketball games are broadcast by campus radio station WBW. The away games are both on radio at 88.3 FM and via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com. The home games are available only via internet.
