Women's Basketball Team Defeats Heidelberg, 91-41, in Tiffin for Third Straight Win

BEREA, OHIO -- Freshman guard Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) and freshman forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's) each scored a season-high 10 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg College, 91-41, today (Saturday, January 3, 2009) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win was the third straight for the Yellow Jackets.
 
In addition to Strayer and Spisak for B-W, 14 of the 15 players that dressed for B-W scored.  Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name), who was injured in the first half and did not return, did not score but led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high five assists. Heidelberg was led by freshman guard Lyndsey DeVault with 10 points.
 
With its win, B-W improves to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the OAC and next plays on Wednesday, Jan. 7 when it hosts Otterbein College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m. Media and Fans can listen to this game live on campus radio station WBW's Internet Web site at www.wBW.com.
 
With its loss, Heidelberg is now 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the OAC.
 
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 17:47 mark when senior All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made a three-pointer.  Following a Heidelberg three-pointer, B-W scored the next five points to take a 12-3 lead at the 16:29 mark when sophomore guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) made a three pointer.
 
Following a Heidelberg basket, the Yellow Jackets went on a 17-0 run to take control of the half and the game at 29-7 with 7:51 left when freshman forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made a jump shot in the lane.  B-W extended its lead to 33 points at 47-14 with :46.6 left when sophomore guard Carrie Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) made two free throws.  The Jackets also led at halftime, 47-16.
 
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 52 points at 91-39 with :19.7 when junior guard Diandra Bremond (Cleveland/ John F. Kennedy) made two free throws.
 
For the game, B-W shot a season-best 32-of-62 from the field for 53.3 percent, including 46.2 percent from three-point range on six-of-13 shooting, and added 21-of-25 free throws for 84 percent.  B-W also dominated the glass as the Yellow Jackets outrebounded Heidelberg by a 50-32 margin.  In addition, 23 of B-W's 32 baskets were assisted.
 
Following its game against Otterbein, B-W will travel to New Concord, Ohio on Saturday, January 10 to play OAC-rival Muskingum College in the Muskingum HPER Center at 3:00 p.m. Media and Fans can listen to this game live on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via WBW's Internet Web site at www.wBW.com.

They are the January 17, 2009 home game versus Marietta College at 3:00 p.m., its February 14 home game versus Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. and its Feb. 18 contest at cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m.
