4th-Ranked Yellow Jackets Defeat Arch-Rival Wittenberg, 77-57

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior point guard Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) scored a career-high-tying 16 points as the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated arch-rival Wittenberg University, 77-57, tonight (Tuesday, December 2, 2008) in a non-league game in Berea. 

With its win, B-W is now 3-1 overall and has won two straight games. Wittenberg is now 4-2 overall and has lost two straight

In addition to Quiring, senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma Hts./ Holy Name) and sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) each had 10 points. Junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) also had nine points, a game-high eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Wittenberg was led freshman forward Sarah Watson with 14 points.

For the game, B-W made 52.7 percent of its field goal attempts (29-of-55), including 54.5% of its three-pointers (six-of-11), and 61.9% of its foul shots (13-of-21).

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 16-2 lead at the 14:13 mark when freshman back up forward Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) rebounded a missed shot and then scored.  The Tigers then went on a 7-2 run to close to 18-9 with 11:05 left when sophomore wing Katherine Hueter made a layup.

B-W went on a 5-0 run to increased its lead to 23-9 with 8:32 left when Mondrach made a layup. The Jackets then outscored the Tigers 22-14 to build their largest lead of the stanza at 45-23 with 31.18 seconds left before halftime when Quiring made two foul shots. B-W also led 47-25 at the intermission.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to 24 points on three separate occasions with the last being at 53-29 with 17:02 left when Brough made a layup. The Tigers then went on a 13-3 run to close to within 14 points at 56-42 with 11:30 left when freshman guard Allie Leopard made a foul shots.

B-W then went on its own 10-4 run to increase its lead back to 20 points at 66-46 with 7:50 left when snior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) canned a three-pointer. The closest the Tigers would get after that point was 15 points on two separate occasions.

The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, December 6 when they travel to Columbus to play Capital University in their 2008-2009 Ohio Athletic Conference opener in the Capital Center at 2:00 p.m. Fans are reminded that they can listen to all Yellow Jacket basketball games on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com.

In addition this winter, three Yellow Jacket men's and three women's games will be televised on SportsTime Ohio on a delay basis. The men will play on STO this Saturday, Dec. 6 versus Capital University. Air times are at 8:00 p.m. on Dec. 6 and at noon on both Dec. 7 and Dec. 8. The other men's TV games are on January 10, 2009 versus Muskingum College and February 18 at cross-town rival John Carroll University. The three women's games to be televised are Jan. 14 at JCU, on Jan. 17 versus Marietta College and February 14 versus Muskingum.
