Wilmington Women's Basketball Team Defeats the Yellow Jackets, 72-60, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior Kortney Kin scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Wilmington College women's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 72-60, today (Saturday, December 20, 2008) in Ohio Athletic Conference action in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

In addition to Kin for Wilmington, junior guard Marianne McGoron scored 12 points and sophomore forward Olivia Waters totaled 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. B-W was led by a 12-point and 13-rebound effort from junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty). Sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) also reached double-figures for the Yellow Jackets with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

With its win, Wilmington improves to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W is now 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.

Wilmington hit 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc in the first seven and a half minutes to build an early 18-9 lead. B-W chipped away and pulled to within two points, at 24-22, following a layup from junior forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) at the 7:25 mark. After the two sides exchanged buckets, the Yellow Jackets evened the score at 26-26 when Brough connected on a short jumper with 5:18 left before intermission.

BW grabbed its first lead at 27-26 with a free throw from Schroeder at 4:18 and was able to extend its lead to 32-30 at halftime. 

Each side started the second half cold and the score was tied at 39-39 with 11:42 remaining in the contest. Wilmington would go ahead 46-41 before B-W's Schroeder buried a three-pointer at the 10:15 mark and freshman forward Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) scored on layup to even the score at 9:39. 

The Quakers regained control with a 7-0 run capped by two McGoron free throws with 7:47 left on the clock. Wilmington's lead grew to 10 points, at 61-51, before the Yellow Jackets rallied with a 7-1 run culminating in a Brough layup to cut the deficit to four points, at 62-58, with 2:33 remaining.

However, the Quakers outscored B-W, 10-2 down the stretch, and were able to hold the Jackets to just one basket the rest of the way en route to earning the 72-60 victory. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, December 22 when they travel to Greencastle, Indiana to play powerful DePauw University at 6:00 p.m. Then, after the Christmas holiday, the BW women travel to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the Texas Challenge at Trinity University. On Sunday, Dec. 28, B-W plays host Trinity at 7:00 p.m. CST and then plays Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) University on Dec. 29 at 5:00 p.m. CST.
