DePauw (Ind.) Women's Basketball Team Defeat the Yellow Jackets, 74-63, in Greencastle, Ind.

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Katie Mathews scored a season and career-high 22 points as the DePauw University women's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 74-63, today (Monday, December 22, 2008) in a non-league game at the Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Indiana.  A 32-12 Tiger scoring advantage at the foul line was a key to the game and Yellow Jacket loss.

In addition to Mathews for DePauw, junior forward Emily Marshall and sophomore guard Brooke Osborne each scored nine points. B-W was led by sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 20 points.

With its win, DePauw improves to 6-3 overall and won its third straight contest. With its loss, B-W is now 4-5 overall and lost its second straight game and fourth in its last five games overall.

In the first half, DePauw jumped out to an early 11-6 lead at the 15:30 mark when Mathews made a jump shot.  The Tigers built their largest lead of the first stanza at 24 points at 38-14 with 52 seconds left when sophomore guard Brianna Frigerio made a layup.  A 5-0 B-W run, capped by a three-pointer by junior forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) at the buzzer, left DePauw with a 38-19 halftime advantage.

In the second half, B-W continued its run by scoring the first four points and trailed by 15 points at 38-23 when junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) made a layup. The Yellow Jackets then got to within 13 points at 44-31 with 15:51 remaining when senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) stole the ball and drove the length of the floor to score on a layup.

Following a Tiger basket, B-W closed the gap to 12 points at 46-34 when Schroeder made a three-pointer. A 19-11 run by DePauw increased the lead back to 20 points at 65-45 with 8:36 left when freshman forward Katie Aldrich made a layup. Undaunted, B-W scored eight straight points to close to within 12 points at 65-53 with 6:09 left when senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made two foul shots. A steal and layup by Schroeder then cut it to 10 points at 71-61 with 1:36 left, but a DePauw three-pointer pushed the lead back to 13 points and sealed the win.
