Women's Basketball Team Defeats Marietta, 74-39, in Berea for Seventh Straight Win

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a game-high 15 points as the Baldwin-Wallace women's basketball team defeated Marietta College, 74-39, today (Saturday, January 17, 2009) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The victory was the seventh straight for the Yellow Jackets.

Media and fans are reminded that today's B-W versus Marietta women's game will be televised on a delayed basis by SportsTime Ohio (www.sportstimeohio.com). Air times are at 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2:00 p.m.

In addition to Schroeder for the Yellow Jackets, freshman backup forward Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) had 12 points.  Marietta was led by senior guard Nikki Driscoll with 10 points.

With its win, B-W improves to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Marietta is now 2-14 overall and 0-9 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Pioneers grabbed a quick 2-0 lead before the Yellow Jackets ran off 12 straight points to lead 12-2 at the 14:32 mark when senior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) made a jump shot.

Following a Pioneer three-pointer, B-W scored 11 straight points to lead 23-5 at the 9:31 mark when Schroeder made a layup. The largest lead of the stanza was 21 points at 34-13 at the 2:53 mark when sophomore guard Diandra Bremond (Cleveland/JFK) made a layup. B-W led at halftime, 35-17.

In the second half, Marietta cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 16 points at 39-23 with 17:55 left when senior guard Nikki Driscoll made a three-pointer. Undaunted, B-W went on a 23-10 run to extend its lead to 29 points at 62-33 with 7:31 left when junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) made a jumper. The largest lead of the game was 38 points at 73-35 at the 2:17 mark when sophomore guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Fireland) made two foul shots.

The Yellow Jacket women return to action next Saturday, January 24 when they host first place and OAC-rival Capital University in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.  This is the first game of the second half of the OAC regular season schedule.
