Men’s Swimming and Diving Sets School Record on First Day of OAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team set one school-record as it stands in fourth place after the first day of competition at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, which is hosted by BW, in the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.

The Yellow Jackets are fourth of five teams with 95 points. Three-time defending OAC Champion and crosstown rival John Carrol leads with 250 points.

The top three individuals and the top two relay teams earn All-OAC honors.

BW was led by  freshman stroker Michael Lewis (Lancaster), who had the second fastest qualifying time in a school-record time of 1:53.76, placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 155.10.

In addition, junior Academic All-OAC freestyler Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 21.72 second. Senior All-OAC AC performer Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) took 13th in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 22.57. Freshman freestyler Austin Olsavsky (Medina), who set a career-best in the prelims with a time of 4:53.62, placed 13th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.93.

In relay action, the 200-freestyle unit of Butt, Shaw, Olsavsky and freshman freestyler Immanuel Ayangoke (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles Academy) finished fourth in a season-best time of 1:28.22.  The 400-yard medley squad of junior stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory), Lewis, Shaw and Olsavsky took fourth in a season-best time of 3:33.29.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action for the second day of the OAC Championships on Friday, February 14.  Preliminary action will begin at 10 a.m. and the finals will be contested at 6 p.m.   The OAC Championships will be held on Saturday, February 15.
