Men's Swimming and Diving Drops 2019 Opener to NCAA Division II Malone

CANTON, Ohio. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team opened the 2019 portion of its schedule as it fell to NCAA Division II Malone University in the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

BW (3-5) fell to Malone by a final score of 121-99.   

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference diver Evan Rinaldi (Cleveland Heights) and freshman stroker Michael Lewis (Lancaster), who is this week's OAC Men's Swimmer of the Week, each won a pair of events. Rinaldi won both the 1-meter with a career-best 183.40 poins and the 3-meter with a season-best 155.15 points, respectively. Lewis won the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley in times of 2:19.52 and 2:01.26.

Also earning victories were junior All-OAC stroker Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) and sophomore stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory). Shaw won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.20 seconds and was second in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 2:06.52.  Morsch won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:06.72 and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:06.91.

In addition, sophomore freestyler Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle in times of 1:53.92 and 5:22.33.  Senior freestyler Tyler Allison (Napoleon) placed third in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.46. 

In relay action, the 400-medley squad of Morsch, Lewis, Shaw and Butt touched the wall first in a season-best time of 3:41.50.

BW returns to OAC action on Friday, January 18 when it travels to Ada to take on Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center Natatorium at 7 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets return home to the friendly confines of the BW Natatorium on Saturday, January 19 when they host crosstown rival John Carroll University in an OAC dual meet and the Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the rebirth of BW Swimming & Diving at 1 p.m.
