Swimming and Diving Teams Fall to Case Western Reserve in Regular Season Finale

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out the regular season portion of its 2018-19 season as it was defeated by crosstown rival and nationally ranked Case Western Reserve on Seniors' Day in the BW Natatorium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

Prior to the meet, the team honored its four-senior student-athletes in freestyler Tyler Allison (Napoleon), stroker John Beyer (Columbus/Centennial), All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC stroker Sarah Krupp (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and freestyler Claire Onchuck (Darrien, Ill./Hinsdale South).

The BW men (4-8) lost to #17 Case Western Reserve by a final score of 189-91.  The Yellow Jacket women (7-7) fell to the #16 Spartans by a final score of 195-95.

The men's team was led by freshman stroker Michael Lewis (Lancaster) as he won the 50-yard breaststroke in a time of 27.71 seconds, the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:02.08 and the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:27.11.

In addition, sophomore stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 57.28 and the 200-yard freestyle in a 50-free season-best time of 22.84 and a 200-free career-best time of 1:52.57. 

Also, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference stroker Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 53.20, second in the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 24.95 and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 51.63.  Sophomore freestyler Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) took second in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50.95 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:29.21. Allison finished third in the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 27.19. Sophomore freestyler Connor Hartup (Westlake) was second in the 400-yard individual medley relay in a career-best time of 5:07.25 and took third in the 1000-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 11:49.92.  Freshman diver Tanner Elenbaas (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) was third in the 1-meter six-dive event with 175.70 points and fourth in the 1-meter and five-dive event with 133.70 points. Junior All-OAC diver Evan Rinaldi (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights) finished fourth in the 1-meter six-dive event with 150.20 points.

In relay action, the 200-yard medley squad of Morsch, Lewis, Shaw and Butt placed third in a time of 1:43.22. the 200-yard freestyle unit of Beyer, Allison, Rinaldi and Hartup touched the wall first in a time of 1:40.18.

The women's team was led by junior All-OAC freestyler Olivia Jacob (Canton/McKinley) and freshman stroker Bella Ratino (Mentor/Hawken).  Jacob won the 400-yard individual medley in a career-best time of 5:01.02 and was the runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:31.52.  Ratino won the 500-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 5:17.40 and placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 2:05.80. 

In addition, Krupp was the runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 5:27.05.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC diver/stroker Ellie Clymer (Independence) placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke in a career-best time of 33.40 seconds, second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:12.85 and second in the 1-meter six-dive event with 168.60 points. Junior All-OAC freestyler Allie Thorson (Amherst/Marion Steele) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.65 and third in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:24.97.  Sophomore All-OAC stroker Marissa Kural (LaGrange, Ill. /Lyons Township) placed second in the 50-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 27.84 and was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 1:06.80 

Also, junior All-OAC stroker Erika Nockengost (Cuyahoga Falls) was third in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:01.70 and the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:14.09.  Junior stroker Alyssa Mahle (Aurora) took fourth in the 50-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 33.16.  Sophomore All-OAC diver Lauren Franz (Canton/GlenOak) was fourth in the 1-meter and five-dive and six-dive events with points of 109.80 and 147.55. Sophomore stroker Lauren Martello (Huron/Sandusky) took fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle in season-best times of 27.10 of 1:00.45.  Freshman stroker Kayla McClintock (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) finished fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:43.44. 

In relay action, the 200-yard medley relay unit of Kural, Clymer, Nockengost and Martello took third in a season-best time of 1:58.60.  The 200-yard freestyle squad of Nockengost, Thorson, Ratino and junior freestyler Jenna Ball (Salamanca, N.Y.) touched the wall first in a time of 1:45.42.

BW returns to action when it competes in the three-day OAC Championships on February 14-16 at the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.  Preliminary action begins each day at 10 a.m. with finals to be held each night at 6 p.m.
