Men's Swimming Takes Fourth at Diamond City Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming team finished fourth at the Diamond City Invitational hosted by King's College at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center.

BW was fourth of nine teams with 487.5 points.  King's was the champion with 673.5 points.   

The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman stroker Michael Lewis (Lancaster) as he won the 200-yard breaststroke in a career-best time of 2:13.98, won the 200-yard individual medley in a career-best time of 1:59.39 and was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:01.32.

In addition, junior All-OAC stroker Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.78 seconds, was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 2:06.59 and finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 22.94. Sophomore stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in a career-best time of 55.39 seconds, fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in a career-best time of 2:04.13 and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 2:04.04. sophomore freestyler Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 49.49 seconds, fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 1:51.17, and took ninth in the 500-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 5:07.95. Senior stroker Tyler Allison (Napoleon) finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 58.37 and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 50.72. Senior stroker John Beyer (Columbus/Centennial) tied for fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 58.84 and was eighth in the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 2:08.89. Sophomore stroker Kyle Cordrey (Mansfield/Ontario) finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 2:07.23 and took fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in a career-best time of 55.42. Freshman Christian Velasquez (Fulshear, Texas/Seven Lakes) was ninth in the 400-yard individual medley in a career-best time of 4:47.12

In relay action, the 200-yard freestyle team of Shaw, Beyer, Allison and Butt took fifth in a season-best time of 1:30.24. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Morsch, Lewis, Shaw and Butt earned the victory in a season-best time of 1:39.18.  The 400-yard freestyle unit of Lewis, Morsch, Shaw and Butt was fourth in a season-best time of 3:18.11. The 400-yard medley relay quad of Morsch, Lewis, Shaw and Beyer finished third in a season-best time of 3:39.29. The 800-yard freestyle team of Lewis, Butt, Morsch and Cordrey was the runner-up in a season-best time of 7:26.69.  

BW is back in action on Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1 when the divers travel to Wooster to compete in the Wooster Invitational in the Timken Natatorium inside the Armington Physical Education Center at 6 p.m.  The Yellow Jacket swimmers will travel to Bethany, West Virginia on Saturday, December 1 for a non-conference dual meet against Bethany College in the John J. Knight Natatorium at 1 p.m.
