Warner’s Last Second Three Sends Men’s Basketball to OAC Tournament Semifinals

BEREA, Ohio – Senior forward Zach Warner (Clyde) hit the game-winning three-pointer with two seconds remaining as the fourth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team won an 86-83 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game against fifth-seeded Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium.

BW (16-10) advances to the OAC Tournament Semifinals to face top-seeded, OAC Regular Season Champion and No. 4-nationally ranked Marietta College (23-3) on Thursday, February 25 in the Ban Johnson Arena at 7:30 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets had four player score in double figures led by sophomore All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) with a game-high 37 points.  Warner tallied 12 points, including the game-winning three. Junior guard Brandon Gleim (Hilliard/Davidson) and freshman guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) each contributed 10.  Junior forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

Ohio Northern (12-14) had three players score in double digits led by junior forward Aron Thress with a double-double as he scored 23 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.  Junior point guard Nate Burger recorded 19 points off the bench and sophomore forward Joey DiOrio tallied 10 points.

After the game was tied at 16-16 at the 10:57 mark of the first half, the Polar Bears went on an 11-2 run to take a 27-18 lead on a triple by DiOrio at the 6:56 mark.  The Yellow Jackets closed out the half on 18-5 run to lead 36-32 at the intermission.

Ohio Northern opened the second half on a 10-8 run to cut the lead down to 44-42 on pair of free throws by junior point guard Joey Hurless at 16:45.  BW responded with a 4-0 run to push its lead 48-42 on layup by Kuhn at the 15:41 mark.  The Polar Bears used a 13-6 run to take a 55-54 lead when Burger converted the traditional three-point play at 10:05. 

After the game was tied at 70-70 with 5:44 remaining, Ohio Northern went on an 8-4 run to take a 78-74 lead when Threes converted the three-point play at 2:47.  The Yellow Jackets answered with a 5-2 run to cut the lead down to 80-79 on a reverse layup by Battle at the 1:11 mark.   BW won the game with two seconds left when Warner knocked down a three-pointer.  After the Polar Bears were unable to get the ball inbounds, the Yellow Jackets took over possession and sealed the game with a pair of free throws by Kuhn.

The winners of Thursday' semifinal games advance to the OAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, February 27 on the campus of the highest remaining seed at 2 p.m.  The winner of the OAC Tournament receives an automatic bid in to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
