BEREA, Ohio -- Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) and freshman guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/ Lincoln) each scored 15 points, but the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost to No. 10-nationally Marietta College, 90-70, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Suits & Sneakers for Cancer Day in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
In addition to Kuhn and Battle for BW (10-9, 5-7 OAC), senior Academic All-OAC guard Zach Warner (Clyde) had 13 points. Marietta (17-2, 11-1 OAC) was led sophomore guard Dillon Young with a game-high 18 points and junior forward A.J. Edwards had 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
In the first half, BW opened the game with a three-pointer by Battle at 19:28, but the Pioneers ran off 16 straight points, including three triples by Young to lead 16-3 at 16:10. Twice the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to eight, with the last at 23-15 at 12:22, but Marietta outscored BW 7-0 to build a 30-15 advantage at 10:51.
After MC built a 34-17 lead at 8:46, BW outscored the Pioneers 14-4 to cut the deficit to 28-31 at 5:38 when junior guard Brandon Gleim (Hilliard/ Davidson) made a trey. Marietta led at halftime, 47-38.
In the second half, BW cut the Pioneer lead to 57-52 at 13:42 when Warner knocked down his second straight three-pointer. Again the Pioneers went on a run and outscored BW 13-5 to gain a 70-57 lead at 7:51 when Edwards made a layup, was fouled and missed his charity toss. That was as close as BW would get to the Pioneers.
BW is back in action on Wednesday, February 3 when the Yellow Jackets travel to Tiffin, Ohio to play Heidelberg University at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is on Saturday, Feb. 6 when BW hosts Otterbein University in the Ursprung Gym at 3 p.m.
