DEFIANCE, Ohio -- Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team beat host Defiance College, 67-57, in the consolation game of the Defiance College Purple & Gold Tournament in the Karl H. Weaner Center. The Yellow Jackets finish in third place.
Kuhn made 7 of 16 field goals, including 3 of 9 three-pointers, and 6 of 9 foul shots en route to game-high scoring honors. He entered the game leading the OAC with 24.5 points-per-game.
In addition to Kuhn, for BW (8-4), sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. Defiance (5-5) was led by junior forward Chris Holmes with 19 points. Junior forward Keandre Gilmer had a game-high 14 rebounds.
In the first half, BW gained an early, 2-0 lead when Fetherolf made a layup. The Yellow Jacket lead grew to 12-7, its largest lead of the half, at 15:16 when Kuhn made a three-pointer. He had 15 first half points.
Following three ties and three lead changes, Defiance had outscored BW 21-12 to build its largest lead of the stanza at 28-24 at 1:20 when freshman guard Blake Dunbar made his second triple. BW came right back to score the final eight points of the half on a jumper by senior Academic All-OAC guard Zach Warner (Clyde) at 1:20, a three-pointer by freshman guard Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls/ CVCA) at the 40-second mark and three foul shots by Kuhn when he was fouled outside the three-point arc with one second remaining.
In the second half, BW scored nine of the first 11 points to lead 41-30 at 15:34 when Kuhn made a jumper and was fouled. The closest Defiance got to BW was four points at 52-48 at 4:33, but the Jackets regained a 10-point lead at 60-50 with 2:39 left when freshman guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/ Lincoln) made a jumper.
BW is back in action on Saturday, January 9 when it resumes Ohio Athletic Conference play at rival Capital University at 2 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when BW hosts Heidelberg University in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
