Fetherolf Leads BW Men’s Basketball Team to 80-77 Win at ONU

ADA, Ohio --  Sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) made a key steal and had the ninth double-double of his career as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated host Ohio Northern University, 80-77, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the ONU Sports Center.  BW overcame deficits of 16 points in each half to win.

scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to lead BW. He had a key steal with eight seconds left and BW winning by one point. In addition to Fetherolf for BW (10-5, 5-3 OAC), sophomore All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) and freshman guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/ Lincoln) each had 13 points. Battle also had a team-high seven assists.

ONU (5-10, 2-6 OAC) was led by jnior forward Aron Thress with a gamehigh 21 points.

In the first half, ONU jumped out to an early, 8-0 lead at 16:44 when Thress made a jumper. He scored the first eight Polar Bear points. ONU increased its lead to 20-4 at 12:44 before the Yellow Jackets ran off 10 straight points to close the deficit to 20-14 at 10:12 when Fetherolf made a three-pointer.

BW cut the ONU lead to 25-21 at 7:27 when senior Academic All-OAC forward Ryan Walsh made a jumper. After ONU nudged its lead back to double-digits on two separate occassions with the last at 38-28 at 2:09, the Jackets went on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 40-36 at 40.6 seconds when freshman guard Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls/ CVCA) made a short jumper. ONU led at halftime, 43-36.

In the second half, BW cut the ONU lead to 47-44 at 18:04 when Brandy canned a triple. The Polar Bears outscored the Yellow Jackets 17-4 and rebuilt its largest lead of the game of 16 points at 64-48 at 9:45 when freshman center Ryan Bruns dunked. Undaunted, BW went on a 26-11 run to close the ONU lead to 75-74 at 2:06 when Battle drove the lane and made a layup.

After an ONU hoop gave the hosts a 3-point lead, BW got baskets from Fetherolf at 1:17 and sophomore forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game at 78-77 at 24.4 seconds. Fetherolf then stole the ball. Kuhn was fouled with 7.9 seconds left and calmly dropped in both ends of the one-and-one foul for an 80-77 lead.

ONU had one more chance to tie after BW missed the front end of a one-and-one attempt with 1.1 seconds left. ONU's desperation full-court shot was way off its mark and the Yellow Jackets survived.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, January 20 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m. It is the last game of the first half of the OAC schedule. The BW men remain at home next Saturday, January 19 when the Jackets host Muskingum University in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 4 p.m.
