Kuhn Scores 22 and BW Men Beat Heidelberg, 80-76

BEREA, Ohio --  Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) scored 22 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team beat visiting Heidelberg University, 80-76, in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

In addition to Kuhn, for BW (9-5, 4-3 OAC), sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) had 10 points and seven rebounds and sophomore forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) scored nine points and had a game and career-high 11 rebounds. Heidelberg, (8-6, 3-4 OAC) was led by sophomore guard Kiere' Bennie with 21 points and junior guard DeAvery Collins had 20.


In the first half, BW jumped out to an early, 9-4 lead at 18:18 when Kaminski made a three-pointer. The lead grew to a high of nine points at 19-10 at 12:17 when Kuhn canned a triple.


The Student Princes came back to outscore the Yellow Jackets 18-8 to take the lead at 28-27 at 5:19 when sophomore guard Chris Moxley made a layup. Five lead changes later, BW retook the lead at 34-33 when Kuhn made a layup. BW also led at halftime, 35-33.


In the second half, BW scored the first seven points and regained its nine-point lead at 42-33 at 17:39 when Kuhn nailed a trey.  After the Student Princes cut the BW lead to four on two occasions, including 47-43 at 14:03, the Jackets went on a 8-2 run to build their first double-digit advantage at 55-45 at 11:38 when senior Academic All-OAC guard Zach Warner (Clyde) made a three.


The BW lead increased to 14 at 61-47 at 10:25 when freshman guard Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls/ CVCA) converted a three-point play. Heidelberg came right back to outscore BW 12-1 and cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 62-59 at 6:04.   Back-to-back baskets by Kuhn and Fetherolf pushed the lead to 66-59 at 3:13.


The Student Princes were within two at 73-71 at 44.5 seconds left before Kuhn canned a pair of foul shots to make it 75-71 at 35.6 seconds. A Bennie basket made it 75-73 at 28.9 seconds. Kaminski made a layup to make it 77-73 at 13.7 seconds but Bennie canned a triple to bring Heidelberg within 77-76 with 7.6 seconds left.


Fetherolf made one of two foul shots at 6.7 seconds, and when Heidelberg threw the ball away, Kaminski was fouled with 2.9 seconds left and canned both charity tosses to "ice" the game for the Yellow Jackets.


BW is back in action on Saturday, January 20 when it travels to Ada to play OAC rival Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center at 3 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, Jan. 20 versus OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
