ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) scored a school single-game record 51 points, but the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost at host University of Mount Union, 110-109 in double overtime in the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex. The game was tied 78-78 at the end of regulation 89-all at the end of the first overtime and came down to a missed BW foul shot with 0.7 seconds left in the second extra session.
Kuhn canned 17 of 25 shots from the floor, including 9 of 13 three-pointers and 8 of 9 foul shots to score his 51 points and surpass Bob Walters' previous school-record of 47 points against St. Vincent (Pa.) College in 1961. His nine triples also tied a BW single-game record set by Kevin Krakowiak last season against Mt. Union.
In addition to Kuhn for BW (4-2, 0-1 OAC), junior forward Jaelen Hollinger (Akron/ Hoban) had a career-high 21 points and sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) had his fifth double-double this season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Purple Raiders (4-2, 1-0 OAC) were led by sophomore J.J. Kukura with a team-high 33 points, including seven treys.
In the first half, BW led by as many as 15 at 28-13 when junior point guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) canned a triple at 9:59. BW also led at halftime, 45-37.
In the second half, BW built its largest lead of the game at 17 points at 60-43 on a jumper by Kuhn with 14:19 left. The Raiders went on a 35-18 run to tie it and send it into overtime.
In the first overtime, BW led 85-81 with 2:26 left when Kuhn made both ends of a two-shot foul. But Mt. Union came back to tie it at 89-89 on a triple with 20 seconds left.
In the second extra session, Mt. Union led by as many as six twice with the last at 104-98 with 1:08 left. Twice BW closed to within one point with the last time with 0.7 seconds left when a length of the court pass with two seconds left was deflected to Brandy who scored and was fouled. But Brandy missed the game-tying foul shot and Fetherolf tried to tip in the winning goal but to no avail.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, December 5 when they travel to Westerville, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 3 p.m. The next BW home game is on Saturday, Dec. 19 versus Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 3 p.m.
