BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College first-year Head Baseball Coach Brian Harrison announced the 2010-2011 team award winners for his first season on the bench. Harrison's squad posted a 17-17 record.
The 2011 Yellow Jacket award winners are freshman pitcher Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South), sophomore pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg), sophomore outfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute), sophomore third baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) and senior catcher/ OF John Ulanski (Bay Village/ Bay).
Waite was named as the Outstanding Freshman Player based on his performance on the mound. He made 10 relief appearances and led the bullpen in innings pitched and strikeouts. Waite totaled 16 and two-thirds innings pitched and struck out 13 batters. Hitters compiled just a .282 batting average off of him to tie for second lowest.
Havens was the recipient of the Outstanding Pitcher Award. He made nine appearances, including seven starting assignments with one complete game. Havens led the staff with 43 and two-thirds innings pitched and compiled a 4-1 record. He struck out 28 batters and posted a 4.12 earned run average.
Toughey was the recipient of both the Yellow Jacket Award and the Guy Fisher Award for Academic Excellence.
The Guy Fisher Award is given to the baseball student-athlete who has the highest grade point average among major contributors to the program during a given season. In the classroom, Toughey excelled by posting a 4.00 grade point average for the fall semester of 2010 and a 3.94 grade average during the spring (2011). The business administration and accounting major will earn a Master's degree in B-W's 3:2 Master's of Accounting Program. In addition this spring, Toughey was named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference. He also is a Dean's List student, a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Sigma Alpha honor societies and a Jacket Scholar. In 23 games, Toughey batted .295 (23-for-78) with 18 runs scored, three doubles, one triple, one homerun, 11 runs batted-in and seven stolen bases. He did miss 11 contests due to an injury.
The Yellow Jacket Award is given annually to the exemplary baseball student-athlete who has demonstrated a year-round dedication to the team by displaying a positive attitude toward the game and his teammates and showing a strong work ethic and a style of unselfish play and leadership.
Yost earned the Gold Glove Award. He was third on the team in assists with 52, ninth in putouts with 27 and participated in three double plays. Offensively, Yost batted third and hit .232 with a team-high six doubles and one homerun. He also led the team in being hit-by-pitch eight times and had an on-base percentage of .362.
Ulanski was awarded the Big Stick Award for his hitting exploits. The senior cleanup hitter batted .279 with a .351 slugging average. He had 31 hits, four doubles and led the team with 23 RBI. He also had a .362 on-base percentage and had the lowest strikeout percentage of anyone on the team.
