Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Loses OAC Twinbill with JCU in University Heights

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team lost both games in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University today (Saturday, April 9, 2011) at Wasmer Field in University Heights.  The Blue Streaks won the first game, 11-5, and also captured the nightcap, 10-7.

The Yellow Jackets are now 12-10 overall and have a 1-5 mark in the OAC. JCU is now 9-12 overall and 3-3 in the OAC.

In the first game, B-W jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning only to have JCU answer back in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1. B-W took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second but the Blue Streaks took control by scoring five times in each of the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 11-2 lead. B-W made the final outcome closer in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game at 11-5.

The Yellow Jacket hitting attack was led by sophomore centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/Senior) who had two hits in three at bats with two stolen bases.  

On the mound, junior pitcher Josh Scott (Strongsville) earned the loss in two innings of work giving up six runs on six hits and striking out out one batter dropping his record to 3-2 on the season. Freshman Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) pitched one inning of relief and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk.  Junior pitcher Josh Stobinski (Ottowa Hills) tossed one inning of relief and allowed three runs on three hits.  Junior Chris Terlop (Strongsville) and freshman  Adam Feeley (Springboro) both worked scoreless innings of relief allowing only one hit each.  

In the second game, scoring began in the bottom of the third inning when JCU scored two runs to go up 2-0. Senior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village/Bay) scored in the top of the fourth for the Jackets to cut the Blue Streaks lead to 2-1. John Carroll then built their lead by scoring a combined eight runs in the next three innings compared to the Jackets three runs leaving the score at 10-4. B-W fought back driving in two runs in the eighth and another run in the ninth leaving the game at a final score of 10-7.

The Yellow Jacket hitting attack was led by sophomore DH Matt Kulick (Wilmot/Fairless) who had scored twice and hat two hits. Junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) chipped in two runs batted in for the Jackets.

On the mound junior pitcher Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) worked four and a thirds innings allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Freshman pitcher Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) came on in relief, allowing one walk with sophomore pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg) coming on to pitch one and a third inning of work earning four runs on three hits and a walk.  Waite pitched a third of an inning of relief striking out one, while sophomore Will Pantages (Akron/ Firestone) walked a man and gave up a run.

B-W is back in action on Tuesday, April 12 when it hosts the Cavaliers of Walsh University in a non-conference, nine-inning game at 4:00 p.m. It is the first of six home games at home next week. The next OAC twinbill is on Wednesday, April 13 against the University of Mount Union at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets also host the The College of Wooster in a single game on Friday, April 15 at 4:00 p.m. and OAC-rival Ohio Northern University for two games on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m.
