Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Splits an OAC Twinbill at Capital

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, May 7) at Capital University in Columbus.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 5-4 in eight innings, and the Crusaders captured the nightcap, 5-2. This was the final doubleheader of the season for both teams.

With its split, B-W ends its first season under the direction of Head Coach Brian Harrison at 17-17 overall and 5-11 in the OAC. The Crusaders end their season at 12-22 overall and 8-10 in the OAC.
 

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Crusaders tied it at 3-3 with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third and took a 4-3 lead with a run in the fourth. B-W tied the game with a run in the seventh and scored the winning run in the eighth.


In the first, sophomore centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) led off with a triple and scored on a single by sophomore RF Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Josephs Collegiate). After an out, Tougheyadvanced to second and then senior LF John Ulanski (Bay Village/ Bay) walked. Freshman first basemanMatt Kulick (Wilmot/ Navarre Fairless) singled home Toughey and Ulanski advanced to third. After Kulickstole second base, sophomore 2B Keith Blazek (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) brought home Ulanski with a sacrifice fly.


In the seventh, B-W tied the game when freshman designated hitter Drew Mahler (Wooster) his first career homerun to lead off the inning. The winning run scored in the eighth when Kulick singled with two outs. Freshman Kory Gillissie (Parma/Cleveland St. Ignatius) then ran for Kulick and stole second base and then scored on a Blazek single.


At the plate, Kulick led the seven-hit Yellow Jacket attack with three, NeuschaeferTougheyBlazek andMahler each had one hit.  On the mound, sophomore Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) started and pitched the first two and one-third innings. He was replaced by freshman Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) who pitched the next three and two-third innings before giving way to sophomore Jon Tenley (Wadsorth) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings to gain his first win of the season (1-0). In fact, Tenley pitched 10 and two-third scoreless innings this spring and had a 1-0 record with four saves.


In the nightcap, B-W gained a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning and gained a 2-0 advantage with another tally in the top of the fourth. From that point forward, it was all Capital as the Crusaders scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to gain the split.


At the plate, B-W had just three hits with Toughey getting two of them and scored B-W's run in the fourth frame.  On the mound, sophomore righthander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) pitched the first five and two-third innings and suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 4-1 this season. Junior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) replaced Havens and retired the only batter he faced.
