Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Swept by Third-Ranked Marietta College in OAC Doubleheader

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team was swept by number three nationally-ranked Marietta College in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Thursday, April 7) by scores of 7-1 and 5-1 at Heritage Field. The game was originally scheduled for last Saturday (April 2) but was postponed several times due to inclement weather.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 11-8 overall and 1-3 in the OAC while Marietta improved to 17-2 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

In game one, Marietta starter Brian Gasser tossed a seven inning no-hitter while striking out seven Yellow Jackets. The Pioneers scored seven runs on 14 hits while the Yellow Jackets managed to get one run across the plate.

Marietta got on the board first scoring four runs in the first inning. The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to make the score 7-0. The Yellow Jackets then scored a run in the fifth inning as a hit by pitch, a walk and a double steal allowed senior catcher John Ulanksi (Bay Village/ Bay) to cross home plate on a fielder's choice by sophomore second baseman Keith Blazek (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) making the score 7-1, which would stand up as the final margin.

Sophomore right-hander David Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) started on the mound for BW and threw one inning, allowing four runs on five hits.  In relief, sophomore pitcher Steven Foltz (North Canton/ St. Thomas Aquinas) threw two innings, striking out one, while allowing two runs on six hits.  Junior righty Chris Terlop (Strongsville) threw the final four innings for BW, allowing one run to score on three hits.

In the second game, Marietta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when an error was made with two outs in a bases loaded situation.  BW would close the gap when they scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 3-1.  Marietta would add insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings, making the final score 5-1. The Yellow Jackets were plagued with five errors in the field which resulted in all five of Marietta's runs being unearned.

B-W was led on the mound by senior right-hander Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) who threw six innings, struck out three, and only allowed one walk while giving up three runs on nine hits.  In relief, freshman Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) threw two innings, struck out two, and allowed one run. Sophomore Will Pantages (Akron/Firestone) threw the final frame and allowed one run while striking out one Pioneer batter.

At the plate, Marietta out hit B-W, 11-4. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) who went two-for-three with a RBI.  Sophomore center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria)and Ulanski both went 1-for-4.  Junior catcher Jordan Barnett (Willard) walked in the fifth inning and would eventually steal second base, allowing him to score the lone BW run on Longhitano's single.

B-W is back in action on tomorrow April 8 at 4:00 p.m. when it plays host to Case Western Reserve University in a non-conference nine inning game at the Heritage Field.  The Yellow Jackets then they travel to University Heights to take on cross-town rival John Carroll University on Saturday, April 9 in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
