Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Splits With Mount Union In OAC Doubleheader

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split with the University of Mount Union today (Wednesday, April 13) in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 1-0 and 8-6 at Heritage Field.

With the split, the Yellow Jackets improved to 14-11 overall and 2-6 in the OAC while Mount Union went to 10-13 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

In game one, B-W sophomore pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg) threw a complete game one-hit shutout to improve his record to a team-best 4-0 on the season.  Havens pitched all seven innings and allowed just the one hit while striking out four and walking four.

The Yellow Jackets, who only recorded three hits, would score their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore second baseman Keith Blazek (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) singled to right field and sophomore center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) followed with a RBI triple down the right field line to score Blazek

In addition for B-W, junior catcher Jordan Barnett (Willard) recorded the third hit when he doubled to right center in the bottom of second inning.

In the night cap, Mount Union capitalized on the Yellow Jacket's errors scoring four runs in the top of the third and two more in the fourth inning. After a run in the fourth, B-W battled back in the bottom of the seventh with four runs to cut the lead down to 7-5. Mount Union added an insurance run in the top of the ninth increasing the lead to 8-5. In the ninth the Yellow Jacket's comeback came up short only as they added one run in the inning making the final score 8-6. 

Leading the Yellow Jackets at the plate was Barnett who recorded two hits and was walked twice. Also for B-W Neuschaefer went 1-3 with two walks and scored two Yellow Jacket runs. Junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) went 1-4, with a RBI double down the right field line in the seventh inning.

On the mound, five B-W pitchers saw action, with senior starter Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) picking up the loss. In relief, junior Josh Scott (Strongsville) pitched two scoreless innings striking out three without surrendering a walk.
 
B-W is back in action on Friday, April 15 when it hosts the Fighting Scots of The College of Wooster at 4:00 p.m. in a rescheduled game from March 31.  The Yellow Jackets return to OAC play on Saturday, April 16 when the they play host to the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University at 1:00 p.m.
