BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University by a score of 5-1 today (Friday, April 8) at Heritage Field.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-8 overall. Case Western Reserve falls to 21-11 with its loss.
The Yellow Jackets would strike first as they scored two runs in the third inning. Case scored their only run of the game in the top of the sixth to make the score 2-1. Baldwin-Wallace then added three more insurance runs in the 7th inning, including a two-run homerun from sophomore infielder Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) which extended the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-1.
Freshman pitcher Jon Capadona (North Royalton) towed the rubber for the Yellow Jackets and went five innings while only surrendering one earned run on four hits and striking out two Spartans, en route to picking up his first collegiate win. Junior reliever Bill Bostelman (Marion/Harding) finished the game out, throwing the final four innings. Bostelman allowed no runs on three hits and had seven strikeouts, picking up his first career save for the Yellow Jackets.
At the plate, B-W was led by Yost and freshman outfielder Ryan Weed (Chardon). Yost was 2-for-4 with the two-run homerun in the seventh, and three runs batted in. Weed was 2-for-3 with two singles and one run scored. Sophomore leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute)went 1-for-2 with two walks on the day.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, Saturday (April 9) when BW travels to Cleveland cross-town and OAC rival John Carroll University for a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
