Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Swept by Seventh-Ranked Heidelberg in an OAC Doubleheader

TIFFIN, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team was swept by No.7-ranked Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Wednesday, April 20) at The Peaceful Valley Field.  The Student Princes won the first game, 3-1, and captured the nightcap, 6-5.

With their losses, the Yellow Jackets fell to 15-15 overall and 3-9 in the OAC. With their wins, the Student Princes improved to 26-6 overall and 10-2 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Student Princes scored their three runs and had four of their six base hits in the bottom of the second inning off of sophomore starter David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley). The Yellow Jackets scored their lone run in the top of the third inning when sophomore leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate) doubled with two outs, moved to third following a failed pickoff attempt and error by the Heidelberg pitcher and then scored when sophomore 3B Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) singled.

Despite the loss, B-W out hit Heidelberg, 8-6. Toughey and Yost led the Yellow Jacket hitters as Toughey was 2-for-4 with the run scored and double, and Yost was 2-for-3 with the run batted-in.  On the mound, Redovianpitched six innings, allowed six hits, three runs (all earned), struck out a career-high eight and walked just one batter as he fell to 2-4 overall this season.

In the second game, Heidelberg scored a run in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. B-W battled back in the top of the third inning capitalizing on the Student Prince errors to score three runs. The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the top to the fourth when junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) singled to left center to score junior catcher Jordan Barnett (Willard) who reached on a fielders choice earlier in the inning. Heidelberg got a run back in the bottom of the fourth trimming the lead down to 4-3. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the seventh, when Yost doubled down the left field line scoring Longhitano increasing the lead to 5-3.

The Student Princes scored three runs in the ninth inning including a bases load walk to record the comeback victory.

Despite the loss for B-W, Longhitano led the Yellow Jacket hitters by going three-for-four with one RBI and two runs scored. Junior rightfielder Anthony D'Attoma (Copley) and Yost accounted for the other two Yellow Jacket hits with Yost adding a RBI. 

On the mound, senior southpaw Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) started and went six and one-third innings, striking out four and throwing 125 pitches. Junior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) came in to relieveFlanigan in the middle of the sixth getting out of a jam with the next two batters flying out. Bostelman pitched a hitless and scoreless one and two-thirds innings. Junior Josh Scott (Strongsville) came in relief in the ninth inning and was credited with the loss.

B-W is back in action on Friday, April 22 when it travels to Wilmington to play the Wilmington College Quakers in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.  The next and final Yellow Jacket home game is on Wednesday, April 26 when B-W hosts traditional rival Hiram College in a single, nine-inning game on Seniors' Day at 4:30 p.m.
