Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader With Otterbein In OAC Opener for Yellow Jackets

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split with Otterbein University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Tuesday, April 5) at Heritage Field by scores of 8-2 and 7-6.

B-W was held to only five hits in the game as Otterbein starter David Cydrus went seven strong innings. At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by freshman outfielder, Ryan Weed (Chardon) who went 2-for-3 while designated hitter Anthony D'Attoma (Copley) went 1-for-3 with a RBI. Sophomore outfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) also was 1-for-3.In game one,  the Cardinals were first on the board scoring two runs on two hits in the second inning. The Yellow Jackets then scored one run on two errors made in the field by Otterbein. Otterbein added another run in the fourth ending the inning with a runner on base.  B-W then fought back adding another run in the sixth to make the score 3-2 going into the seventh inning. The Cardinals erupted in the seventh scoring five runs on three hits putting the game too far out of reach for the Yellow Jackets.

In the second game,  B-W would score six runs on six hits in the first two innings.  The Cardinals fought back and scored two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 6-2.  Otterbein then added an unearned run in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth to come within in two runs (6-4).  The Cardinals added a run in the seventh and eighth innings before the Yellow Jackets tacked on the insurance run to secure the 7-6 victory.

B-W was led on the mound by sophomore pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg) who threw five innings, struck out three, and only allowed one walk while giving up four runs.  Freshman pitcher Cory Waite (Willoughby/South)pitched one inning of relief in the eighth inning  while striking out two, and allowed one earned run. Sophomore pitcher Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) closed the door in the ninth to  pick up his second save of the season.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) who went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.  Weed and junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) both went 2-for-4 and both scored a run.  Sophomore third baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) doubled knocking in two RBI and senior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village/ Bay) also doubled for one RBI.

B-W is back in action  tomorrow April 6 when it hosts Marietta College in an OAC Doubleheader at Heritage Field at 1:00 p.m.  The game had been rescheduled from Saturday, April 2.   The Yellow Jackets will then play host to the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University in a single nine inning non-conference game on Friday, April 8 at 4:00 p.m.
