Volleyball Team Splits on Day One of the Midwest Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team (12-19) split a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the Calvin (Mich.)/Hope (Mich.) Midwest Invitational today (Friday, October 31, 2008) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Yellow Jackets defeated Hanover (Ind.) College 3-0 before falling to co-host and #14-ranked Calvin (Mich.) College 3-0.

In the opener against Hanover, B-W was led offensively by senior four-year starting middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy) with 17 kills.  Sophomore setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) led the way with 29 assists.

On defense, sophomore defensive specialist Lissy Grame (Berea) led the Yellow Jackets with 14 digs. Passen contributed 10 digs to the defensive effort, followed by freshman Chelsea Nissen(Williston/Genoa) with nine. This was the second time this season B-W defeated Hanover, the first victory coming on day two of the Mount Saint Joseph Fall Classic on September 27.

Against Calvin, DePeters recorded nine kills. Passen again led the team in set assists with 16.  Defensively, junior Kayli Tyson (Olmsted Twp./Olmsted Falls) recorded six digs, followed closely by Grame with five.

B-W returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, November 1) for the second day of the Midwest Classic.  The Yellow Jackets will play Manchester (Ind.) College at 11:00 a.m. and face co-host Hope (Mich.) College Hanover (Ind.) College at 1:30 p.m.
