Volleyball Team Goes 1-1 on Day Two of Midwest Classic

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team (13-20 overall) completed day two of the Calvin (Mich.)/Hope (Mich.) Midwest Invitational today (Saturday, November 1, 2008) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Yellow Jackets defeated Manchester (Ind.) in their first match of the day by a score of 3-1.  B-W dropped the second match against co-host Hope College by a score of 3-0.



In the first match, B-W was led offensively by senior four-year starting middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./Mt. St. Mary Academy) with 13 kills.  Freshman outside hitter Nicole Schoen (Bellevue)followed with nine kills.  Sophomore setter Casey Passen (Ashville/Teays Valley) led in assists with 32. 

On defense, sophomore defensive specialist Lissy Grame (Berea) paced the Jackets with 18 digs.  Freshman Chelsea Nissen (Williston/Genoa) and Schoen also contributed defensively with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.  B-W won by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 14-25, and 25-19.
 
Against Hope, DePeters and junior Kayli Tyson (Olmsted Twp./Olmsted Falls) led the offense with six kills each. Tyson also recorded 18 set assists in the match.  Nissen led the defensive charge with 14 digs, while freshman Danielle Gerwin (Bowling Green) added 12.

The #7-seeded Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, November 4 as they begin the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at #2-seed Heidelberg at 7:00 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.
