Volleyball Team Loses its OAC Opener at Wilmington, 3-0

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team lost its 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference opener tonight (Tuesday, September 23) at Wilmington College, 3-0, in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington. Wilmington won by the scores of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-21.

With their loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-7 overall and next play on Friday and Saturday, September 26-27 at the College of Mount St. Joseph College Tournament in Cincinnati.  B-W plays OAC-rival Ohio Northern University and Asbury (Ky.) College on the first evening and then plays Hanover (Ind.) College and host Mt. St. Joseph on the second day.  In victory, Wilmington is now 10-6 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.

Despite the loss, the offense was led by freshman Nicole Schoen (Bellevue) with 13 kills and a .394 hitting percentage and senior middle hitter Maria DePeters (Buffalo, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy) with 12 kills.  Sophomore Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) had 31 set assists and six defensive digs. The defense was led by freshman Danielle Gerwin (Bowling Green) with 16 digs and freshman Chelsea Nissen (Williston/ Genoa) had 12.

After 13 matches, DePeters tops the team with 157 kills, 48 blocks and a .211 hitting percentage. She also is tied with junior Kayli Tyson (Olmsted Falls) for the most service aces with 10 each. Schoen is second in kills with 132 and has 46 digs and 11 blocks. Nissen is third in kills with 66 and digs with 86 and second in blocks with 22. Passen has the most set assists with 312 and is fourth in digs with 69. Sophomore libero Lissy Grame (Berea) has the most digs with 108.

Following its trip to Cincinnati, B-W returns to OAC action on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Columbus to play Capital University at 7:00 p.m.  The next Yellow Jacket home match is Saturday, October 4 when they host Mount Union College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center at 1:00 p.m. on Homecoming.

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, when B-W plays OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in Berea, the Yellow Jacket volleyball team is promoting that evening as Dig for Cure Night to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
