BEREA, OHIO - The women's volleyball team (5-3) completed day two of the 11th Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament today (Saturday, September 6, 2008) at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets rallied to defeat Wooster 3-2 and closed out the day with a 3-0 victory over Alma (Mich.). Four teams posted 3-1 records for the tournament but it was Case Western Reserve's 12-1 game record that earned the Spartans the tie-breaker and the tournament crown.
For the second straight day, the Yellow Jackets fell two sets behind in their opener. Unlike yesterday versus Westminster (Pa.), B-W was able to complete the comeback to defeat Wooster 20-25, 14-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-12.
B-W was led offensively by senior four-year starting middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy) with 13 kills and freshman outside hitters Chelsea Nissen (Williston/Genoa) and Nicole Schoen (Bellevue) with 11 and 10, respectively. In addition, sophomore setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) led the way with a season-high 34 assists. On defense, junior Marissa Jameyson (Wellington)paced the Jackets with 14 digs.
Against Alma, DePeters once again led the charge with 12 kills and a team-best tying six digs on the defensive end. Schoen totaled 10 kills and five digs while Passen paced the Jacket offense with 28 assists on her way to earning all-tournament team honors. The Jackets earned their first 3-0 win of the season by scores of 26-24, 25-23, 25-23.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they host traditional and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:00 p.m.
