Volleyball Team Splits on Day One of MTSJ Fall Classic

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team (7-8) split a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the Mount Saint Joseph Fall Classic today (Friday, September 26, 2008) at the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-0 to Ohio Northern University but rebounded to defeat Asbury (Ky.) College by a score of 3-1.

In the opener against ONU, B-W was led offensively by freshman outside hitter Nicole Schoen (Bellevue) with 10 kills and senior four-year starting middle hitter Maria DePeters (Williamsville, N.Y./ Mt. St. Mary Academy), who recorded nine.  In addition, sophomore setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) led the way with 30 assists.

On defense, freshman defensive specialist Danielle Gerwin (Bowling Green) led the Jackets with 14 digs. Schoen contributed five digs to the defensive effort.

Against Asbury, DePeters recorded a career-high tying 22 kills. Schoen and freshman Leslie Purnell (Springfield/Catholic Central) followed with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  Passen produced a season-high 46 assists to lead the offense while Gerwin paced the defense with a career-high 18 digs.

B-W returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 27) for the second day of the Mount Saint Joseph Fall Classic.  The Yellow Jackets will play host Mount Saint Joseph at 1:00 p.m. and face Hanover (Ind.) College at 5:00 p.m.
