BW Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams Each Fourth After Day One of OAC Championships

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men and women's swimming and diving teams competed on day one (Thursday, February 17) of the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship meet at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium in Akron. Each team currently sits in fourth place.

Ohio Northern University's men totaled 75 points after the first day and were followed by John Carroll University (63), the University of Mount Union (43), BW (38) and Wilmington College (16).  ONU's women totaled 84 points after the first day and were followed by Mt. Union (59), JCU (47), BW (28) and WC (17).

Highlighting the first day of competition were records set by the women's and men's 200-yard freestyle relay team and the All-OAC performance by the men's 400-yard medley relay squad.

The women's squad of sophomores Kelsey Richards (Wadsworth) and Gabby Parker (Girard, Pa./ Villa Maria Academy), freshman Angela Musille (Canton/ GlenOak) and senior Lauren Schaefer (Westlake) placed fourth and set a record with a time of 1:42.14, breaking the previous mark of 1:42.33 that was set in 2007.

The men's quartet of junior Nic Null (Mansfield/ St. Peter's), sophomores Tony Tijerina (Defiance/ Napoleon) and Matt Zych (Des Plaines, Ill./ Maine West) and senior Ryan Musille (Canton/ GlenOak) placed fourth and set a record with a time of 1:26.48 and broke the 2009 mark of 1:26.79 by a team that included Ryan Musille.

The top three individuals and the top two relay teams in each event earn All-OAC honors.

Top All-OAC finishers of the day was the men's 400-yard medley relay team, comprised of Ryan Musille, senior Mike Demitrieff (Parma/ Normandy), Null and freshman Elier Diaz (El Paso, Texas/ Americas). The quartet finished in second place, touching the wall in 3:33.76.

Day two prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow with finals slated to start to 6 p.m. The meet wraps up on Saturday with start times once again at 11:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 5:45 p.m.
