BW Women's Golfers Stand 16th After First Day of NCAA Division III National Tournament

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLORIDA -- The Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University women's golf team stands 16th of 19 teams after the first day (Tuesday, May 10) of the 2011 NCAA Division III National Tournament at the Mission Inn & Resort. This was the first of four days of competition in the 72-hole event.

The Yellow Jackets, playing with two sophomores and three freshmen, recorded 356 total strokes as a team. Each team consists of five student-athletes with the top four scores counting toward the team total on the par-73 and 5,884-yard course. BW entered the tourney ranked 38th nationally in Div. III and earned its automatic berth by winning the OAC crown.

For the Yellow Jackets, sophomore Rebecca Kapusta (Independence) led team with an 86, including a pair of back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes and a 40 for her first nine holes. Freshman Emilee Woolf (Ravenna) had an 87 that also included a pair of birdies en route to a team-low 41 on the back nine holes. Sophomore Brooke Hamilton (Cleveland/ St. Joseph Academy) was next with a 91, including a 45 on the back nine. Freshman Miranda Cunningham (Dayton/ Christian) rounded out the first day scores that counted toward the tea total with a 92, including a 43 on the front. Freshman Rebecca Jones (Hilliard/ Darby) finished her first round with a 98 with her best nine being a 48 on the back.

The Yellow Jackets begin second round play on Wednesday, May 11 with tee times between 12:30-1:10 p.m. BW is paired with Carroll (Wisc.) University the first two days. The final two days will be determined by the first two days of results.

This is the third time that the BW women's program has qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The first two appearances were in 2000 (seventh place) and 2001 (10th place).  The OAC title this spring was BW's third.
