MARIETTA, Ohio – ­The Baldwin Wallace men's soccer team's hopes of competing in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in 2019 came a disappointing end, following a 3-1 defeat against Marietta in its season finale on Marietta Field.

After its loss and the completion of all other OAC matchups this evening, BW (11-9, 4-5 OAC) placed seventh in the final OAC standings, narrowly missing out on postseason play. Meanwhile, Marietta (9-8-1, 4-4-1), the victor in tonight's contest, jumped ahead of the Yellow Jackets for the coveted final playoff spot with a sixth place finish.

Legitimate offensive opportunities were hard to come by in the first half for both teams, as there were only two recorded shots on goal in the frame. The Pioneers made the most of their scoring opportunity when they opened the game's scoring in the 17th minute. Marietta junior Robert Phillips sent a cross into the box, and the ball was then kicked in by senior Luke Maher to put the Pioneers up 1-0. BW played solid defensively for the remainder of the half to retain the one-goal deficit headed to break.

Roughly five minutes into the first half, the Yellow Jackets nodded up the game at 1-1 when freshman forward Shaheen Ghahremani (Streetsboro) scored his first collegiate goal. Ghahremani corralled a corner kick taken by senior All-OAC, Academic All-OAC, and CoSIDA All-American forward Danny Ruple (Berea/Berea-Midpark), and scored with a shot that found the low right corner of the net. Marietta came storming back in the 72nd minute, with two goals approximately three minutes apart. First, sophomore Gavin Long received a thru-ball from freshman Caden Ferguson and shot it into the right corner of the net. Then, freshman Jovonni Auddino increased the lead to 3-1 when he scored on a strike from the top of the box that found the right corner of the net, once again. BW mustered four shots on goal for the half but ultimately could not cut into the Pioneers lead, as the clock trickled down the remaining seconds of the its 2019 campaign.

In his final collegiate game, BW senior goalkeeper Patrick Mehal (Richfield/Revere) made four saves on seven shots faced, and saw his record drop to 10-9 on the year.
