Marietta Men's Basketball Team Defeats Baldwin-Wallace, 71-59, in Marietta

BEREA, OHIO -- Freshman guard Trevor Halter scored a game-high-tying 19 points as the Marietta College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 71-59, today (Saturday, January 17, 2009) in the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta.

With its win, Marietta improves to 8-7 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.  With its loss, B-W falls to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the OAC.

In addition to Halter for the Pioneers, freshman guard Rydell Chrisman and freshman forward Kevin Knab each had 12 points. Knab also had a game-high nine rebounds. For B-W, senior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) led the way with a game-high -tying 19 points and eight rebounds. He was joined in double-digit scoring by junior guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) with 11 points and junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) with 10 markers. 

In the first half, B-W tied the score at 4-4 when Tumblin made two free throws at the 17:33 mark.  A 22-4 Marietta run, capped off by a three-pointer by Chrisman gave the Pioneers a 26-8 advantage with 11:53 to play.  B-W outscored Marietta 16-9 to cut the lead to 35-24 at the 3:46 mark when freshman guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) made a jump shot.  Marietta led 37-26 at halftime.

In the second half, B-W would close within nine points on two occasions with  the last coming with 14:51 to play when senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) made a layup to make the score 43-34.  A jump shot by freshman forward Zane Carter made the score 52-34 with 12:04 to play and capped a 9-0 Marietta run. 

B-W responded by outscoring Marietta 12-3 to close to within 10 points at 55-45 with 6:14 to play following a layup by sophomore forward Kevin Gall (Brook Park/ Midpark). Marietta would open the lead back up to 13 on two separate occasions with the final time coming with 5:13 left following a Carter jump shot to make the score 60-47.  BW would then get within eight twice, but no closer.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21 when they host OAC-rival Heidelberg College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in he Lou Higgins Recreation Center in Berea at 7:30 p.m.
