John Carroll University Men's Basketball Team Defeats Baldwin-Wallace, 77-70, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Freshman guard Joey Meyer scored a game-high 17 points as the John Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 77-70, tonight (Wednesday, January 14, 2009) in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, JCU improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the OAC and the Blue Streaks won their sixth straight game.  With its loss, B-W is 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the OAC and ended a four-game win streak.

In addition to Meyer for the JCU,  sophomore forward Maurice Haynes and freshman guard Corey Shontz each had 10 points. BW was led by junior guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) with 13 points, senior guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) had 12 and junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior)had 10.  

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the 18:05 mark of the first half when Tumblin canned the Yellow Jackets third straight three-pointer. JCU then outscored B-W 10-1 to tie the score at 10-10 with 14:48 left when Schontz made a trey.

B-W scored the next five points to lead 15-10 at the 13:40 mark when sophomore forward Kevin Gall (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) made a jump shot. JCU then outscored the Jackets 13-8 to tie the score again at 23-23 with 7:05 left when Haynes made a layup. 

B-W regained a six-point lead at 29-23 with 4:57 left when sophomore guard Jake Cayton (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) made a triple. A 7-2 run by JCU closed the gap to 31-30 with 25 seconds left before the intermission when Haynes made a layup. The score remained that way at halftime.

In the second half, Glass scored seven points early to give B-W a 38-32 lead at the 17:07 mark before JCU went on a 14-7 run to take its first lead at the 12:23 mark when junior guard Brian Dandrea made a three-pointer. The lead grew to to seven points at 52-45 when JCU completed an 11-0 run with 10:28 left when Dandrea made a jumper.

JCU led by seven points on two more occasions with the last being at 59-52 with 7:18 left when freshman center Matt Crozier made a layup. The JCU lead grew as high as 10 points at 71-61 with 4:20 left when junior guard Chris Zajac made a layup.

B-W then went on a 8-1 run to close to within 72-69 with 2:53 left when freshman point guard Promis Cabill (Elyria/ Senior) made two foul shots. A foul shot by Meyer pushed JCU's lead to four points at 73-69 at the 1:52 mark, a Rudy Kirbus layup made it 75-70 and two foul shots by freshman guard Michael Harnett closed out the scoring.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, January 17 when they travel to Marietta to play OAC-rival Marietta College in an OAC game at 3:00 p.m.
