B-W Men's Basketball Loses to Grace Bible (Mich.), 67-62, in Consolation Game at Calvin Tournament

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team lost to NAIA foe Grace (Mich.) Bible College, 67-62, today (Saturday, November 22, 2008) in the consolation round of the Calvin College Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
 
With its loss, BW falls to 1-2 overall and next plays on Saturday, Nov. 29 against Ithaca (N.Y.) College at 6:00 p.m. in the Allegheny College Tournament in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The consolation and championship games are on Sunday, Nov. 30. With its win, Grace Bible is now 4-3 overall.
 
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an eight-point lead, at 12-4, with 16:21 when junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) made a three-pointer. B-W extended its lead to nine points on two separate occassions with the last at 29-20 with 6:16 left when junior guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior)made a layup. Grace Bible then outscored BW 10-7 but cut the deficit to six points, at 36-30, at the intermission.
 
In the second half, B-W extended its lead back to nine points at 39-30 with 16:12 left when junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) canned a three-pointer. Undaunted, Grace outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-2 to tie it at 41-all with 12:10 remaining. Grace Bible would increase its lead to six at 59-53 with 3:45 left. Twice B-W would trim the deficit to one, the last at 63-62 with 17 seconds left on a layup by Tumblin, but each time Grace Bible answered with a basket. A pair of foul shots with two second left 'iced' the comeback effort.
 
B-W was led by Tumblin with 14 points, senior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) had 13 points and seven rebounds and Brown had nine points and nine rebounds. Grace was led by Allen Durham with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, Ryan Krombeem with 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Matt Kurtz came off the bench to score 11 markers.
 
For his efforts at the Calvin tourney, Bene was named to the all-tournament team.

The first home Yellow Jacket game is on Saturday, December 6 when BW hosts Capital University in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for each team. That game will be televised by SportsTime Ohio.  The game will be shown on STO (www.sportstimeohio.com) at 8:00 p.m. on December 6, at 1:00 p.m. on Dec. 7 and at 12:00 noon on Dec. 8.
