Heidelberg Men's Basketball Team Defeats Baldwin-Wallace, 92-87 in Overtime, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Travis Kinn scored a game-high 27 points as the Heidelberg College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 92-87 in overtime, tonight (Wednesday, January 21, 2009) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea as the first half of the OAC regular season schedule concluded.

With its win, Heidelberg improves to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the OAC.  With its loss, BW falls to 6-10 overall and 2-7 in the OAC and have lost three straight.

In addition to Kinn for the Student Princes, junior guard Jim Smalley had 12 points and sophomore forward Kyle Tuley came off the bench to score 10. For B-W, sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored a team-high 18 points and was joined in double-digits by senior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, junior guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) with 14 points and junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) with 13.  

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 19:41 left when Tumblin made a jump shot. Heidelberg then went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead at the 18:01 mark when Kinn made a layup.

After B-W tied the score at 6-6, Heidelberg outscored the Yellow Jackets 15-10 to take its third five-point lead at 21-16 with 12:04 remaining when Tuley made a layup. Unduanted, B-W scored five straight points to tie it at 21-21 when Brown made a three-pointer with 10:48 left.

Following ties at 23-23 and 25-25, BW took a four-point lead at 29-25 when sophomore guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) made a layup with 7:48 left. HC responded by scoring six straight points on two three-pointers by senior guard Jake Hessey to lead 31-29 with 5:56 left. B-W then outscored the Student Princes 11-2 to lead 40-33 with 2:25 left when Tumblin canned a jumper. B-W extended its lead to 12 points at halftime whenBrown made a trey at the buzzer. 

In the second half, the Student Princes opened on a 10-3 run to close to within 51-46 with 15:44 remaining when Hessey connected on his third three-pointer of the game. Following a free throw by freshman guard Promis Cabill (Elyria/ Senior) to make the score 52-46, the HC bench received two technical fouls in a span of 28 seconds, Student Prince Head Coach Anthony Gholson was ejected and Brown made three foul shots for a 55-46 lead with 13:17 left. A three-pointer by Tumblin pushed the lead back to 12 points at 58-46 with 12:04 left.

Heidelberg was not finished though as the Student Princes outscored B-W 18-11 to close to 69-64 with 5:06 left when junior guard Josh Calver made a foul shot. Another 11-6 HC run gave the Student Princes their first lead of the stanza at 77-75 with 1:11 left.

B-W regained the lead at 78-77 when Glass made a basketball, was fouled and made the free throw with 54.80 seconds remaining. With 13.65 seconds left, Tumblin made one foul shot to give B-W a 79-77 lead. Then Calver countered by making two foul shots with 7.67 seconds left to tie it at 79-79. With 1.35 seconds left Cabill was fouled on his drive to the basket but missed both foul shots to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, B-W regained the lead at 81-79 when Glass made two foul shots at 4:42. HC tied it at 81-81 when Kinn made a jumper at 3:48, gave them the lead at 83-81 at 3:01 with another, an 85-81 lead at 2:05 with a layup and an 87-81 advantage with 1:29 left with a short jumper.  Bene got B-W back to 87-83 with an offensive rebound and a basket at 1:11.

Glass steal and layup at 42.3 seconds made it 87-85. A foul shot by freshman guard Quintin Aden with 32.23 seconds left pushed it back to 88-85. Tumblin then drove to the basket and scored at 19.41 seconds to make the score 88-87. Two foul shots each by Smalley at 18.77 seconds and Aden at 4.75 seconds sealed the comeback win.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 when they travel to Columbus to play first place Capital University at 3:00 p.m. in the Capital Center.
