B-W Men's Basketball Team Falls to Muskingum, 79-66, in New Concord

BEREA, OHIO - Senior forward Pat Byrne scored a team-high 17 points and led four double figure scorers as the Muskingum College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 79-66, today (Saturday, February 14, 2009) in the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord.

With the loss, B-W falls to 7-16 overall and 3-13 in the OAC. Muskingum improves to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the OAC.

In addition to Byrne for the Muskingum, senior guard Trevor Scott had 16 points, senior forward Tyler Felt had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds and senior center Andrew Chonko had 10 markers.  B-W was led by senior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) with a game-high 28 points and four rebounds. Also, junior guard Lou Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) had 10 points.

In the first half, Muskingum jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 18:13 mark when Felt made a layup. B-W then outscored the Muskies 17-12 to tie the game at 19-19 at the 9:30 mark when freshman forward John Pickett (Norwalk/ Collins Western Reserve) made a layup. B-W then gained its first lead of the game at 24-23 at 5:58 when junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) made a three-pointer. B-W also led at halftime at 32-31.

The second half began with four lead changes before Muskingum grabbed a 37-36 lead with 17:13 left when Byrne made a jumper. A three-pointer by Felt pushed the lead to four points at 40-36 with 16:26 left.  Back-to-back three-pointers by Tumblin and freshman point guard Promis Cabill (Elyria/ Senior) gave the lead back to B-W at 42-40 with 15:28 remaining. After Felt converted a three-point play to give the lead back to Muskingum at 43-42, B-W regained its last lead of the contest at 45-43 when Tumblin made another three-pointer.

At that point, Muskingum regained the lead at 46-45 on trey by Scott at 14:17, pushed it to four points at 49-45 on a triple by senior guard Zach Olson at 11:51 and led by as many as 13 points at the final buzzer.

B-W returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when it travels to University Heights to play cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. The game will be taped and then shown on a delayed basis by SportsTime Ohio (www.sportstimeohio.com).
