Capital Defeats Baldwin-Wallace, 92-87 in Overtime, in OAC Opener in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior forward Quentin Mitchell scored a game-high 21 points as the Capital University men's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 92-87 in overtime, today (Saturday, December 6, 2008) in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for each team in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

Media and Fans are remined that this game was taped by SportsTime Ohio and will be televised on a delay basis.  The game will be shown on STO (www.sportstimeohio.com) on Dec. 6 at 8:00 p.m. and at 12:00 noon on both Sunday, Dec. 7 and Monday, Dec. 8.

In addition to Mitchell for Capital, sophomore guard DJ Frazier had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, senior guard Ryan Wood with 14 and senior guard Jake Fanning with 14. BW was led by junior guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/ Senior) and junior All-OAC forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) with 20 points each.

With its win, Capital improves to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. With its loss, loss, B-W is now 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the OAC and next plays on Saturday, Dec. 13 against Ohio Northern University in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 18-11 lead at the 13:34 mark when freshman backup guard Promis Cabill (Elyria/ Senior) made a foul shot.  Capital closed to within one point on three separate occasions before BW regained a six-point advantage at 30-24 with 6:58 left when Brown made a jump shot. The Jackets then increased the lead to seven points at 43-36 when Tumblin made a three-pointer. B-W also led at halftime, 45-38.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to 15 points at 56-41 with 17:34 left when Tumblin made a basket, was fouled and made the foul shot. Capital then went on an 18-7 run to close to 63-59 with 9:01 left when sophomore guard DJ Frazier made two foul shots.

B-W then went on a 7-0 run and to gain a 70-59 lead with 7:12 left when junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) made a basket and was fouled, but missed the free throw. Capital went on its own 21-11 run to close to within 81-80 with 1:07 left when Mitchell made a layup.

A basket by B-W senior center Andrew Bene (Medina/ Highland) with 39 seconds left gave the Yellow Jackets an 83-80 lead. After a change of possession, B-W had a chance to seal the win, but Bene missed two foul shots with 20 seconds left. Capital then tied the game on a three-pointer by senior forward Ross Niekamp with 12 seconds left. It was the only points by Niekamp in the game. A missed three-pointer by Tumblin at the buzzer sent the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Capital took its first lead at 85-83 and since a 2-0 lead early in the game when Mitchell made a steal and scored a layup. B-W then tied it at 85-85 on two free throws by senior Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark). Capital then went back on top 87-85 on two Frazier foul shots with 2:54 left. BW again tied it at 87-87 when Cabill made a layup with 2:45 left.

Capital then gained its final lead at 89-87 on a layup by Mitchell with 50 seconds left. A pair of foul shots by Fanning with 15 seconds left gave Capital a 91-87 lead and 'iced' the game.
