B-W Men's Basketball Team Defeats OAC Foe Muskingum, 67-63, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/Medina Highland) recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Muskingum College by a score of 67-63 this afternoon (Saturday, January 10, 2009) at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, B-W improves to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the OAC and has won four consecutive games.  With its loss, Muskingum is now 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the OAC.

In addition to Bene, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior guard Louis Tumblin (Elyria/Senior) with a game-high 17 points and five assists. Muskingum was led by Andrew Chonko and Trevor Scott with 13 points apiece.

BW opened up a 16-8 lead at 12:45 of the first half when junior forward Paul Glass (Medina/Senior) connected on a jumper  to finish off a 7-0 run by the Yellow Jackets. Muskingum chipped away with a 13-7 run and got to within two, at 23-21, with 7:39 left in the first. The Jackets responded and went back on top by nine, at 34-25, when junior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) connected on a long-range jumper with 2:47 left in the period. A three-point play by Muskingum's Cory Bourquin at the 45 second mark brought the score to 34-28 at intermission.

In the second half, neither side was able to gain much ground until Muskingum tied the score at 46 apiece following a Scott layup at the 10:01 mark. BW quickly went back ahead with a Tumblin three-pointer on its next possession and followed with a 6-1 run to move ahead 55-50 with 5:47 left to play. Muskingum came right back to tie the score at 57-57 after a three-point play from Chonko with 4:20 left on the clock. The teams then exchanged buckets before Muskingum grabbed its first lead of the game, 61-59, following two Scott free throws with 2:50 remaining.

BW answered right back with another Tumblin three-pointer to go back on top, 62-61, with 1:43 left to play. The Jackets then held the Muskies scoreless for the next 1:32 and picked up key free throws from Tumblinand senior guard Dennis Santiago (Brookpark/Midpark) en route to securing the 67-63 victory.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, January 14 versus OAC and cross-town rival John Carroll University. Tip-off from Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea is set for 7:30 p.m.
