B-W Men's Basketball Team Defeats Hilbert (N.Y.), 90-84 (OT) in Allegheny Consolation Game

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored seven of his 17 points in overtime as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Hilbert (N.Y.) College, 90-84, in overtime today (Saturday, November 29, 2008) in the first round of the Allegheny College Tournament in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

In addition, Brown, an All-Ohio Athletic Conference pick last season, had a game-high 13 rebounds and canned the game-tying three-pointer with 34.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

In addition for B-W, 6'6" senior center Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) scored a season-high 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots. For his efforts, Bene was named to his second all-tournament team this season. Also, sophomore back up guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) set a career-high with 18 points and senior 2-time Academic All-OAC guard Dennis Santiago (Brook Park/ Midpark) netted 13 markers Hilbert was led by senior guard Dan Terrette with 21 points, sophomore guard Andrew Marchard with 19, and junior guard Joe Roberts with 12.

With its win, B-W improves to 2-3 overall and next plays on Saturday, December 6 when it hosts Capital University in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Recreation Center at 3:00 p.m. With its loss, Hilbert is now 1-3 overall.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game, capped off by two Bene free throws at the 16:44 mark. B-W increased its lead to as much as 13 points at 17-4 with 12:56 left when junior post Ben Dobberstein (Berea) split a pair of free throws. The Hawks would climb back into the game and take its first lead at 39-38 with 24 seconds left in the half with a three-pointer by Terrette.  The Jackets took a 40-39 lead into half when Santiago made a layup with four seconds remaining in the half.

In the second half, the lead changed hands six times in the first four minutes. A Brown jumper at the 16:19 mark gave B-W a 47-46 lead. B-W would stretch that lead to seven on two seperate occasions, the final of which happened with 10:25 to play on a Dobberstein offensive rebound and put back.  Hilbert would go on a 14-6 run to take a 66-65 lead with 5:11 left, courtesy of a lay-up by senior forward Malcolm Edwards.  Hilbert extended the lead to 71-67 with 3:36 to play on a three-pointer by junior forward Kyle Stark.  The two teams traded buckets until a Brown three-pointer tied the game at 77 with 32.4 seconds on the clock.  After a Hilbert turnover, Brown's three-point attempt at the buzzer fell unsuccessful, forcing overtime. 

In overtime, Brown scored seven points and the Yellow Jackets never trailed en route to a 90-84 win.

The Yellow Jacket game on Saturday, Dec. 6  against Capital will be televised by SportsTime Ohio on a delay basis.  The game will be shown on STO (www.sportstimeohio.com) at 8:00 p.m. on Dec. 6 and at 12:00 noon on both Sunday, Dec. 7 and Monday, Dec. 8.
