No. 3 Baseball Holds Off Westminster (Pa.) in Non-Conference Battle

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team was victorious in a non-conference game against Westminster (Pa.) College by a score of 3-2 at the Westminster Baseball Field.

In what looked to be a pitching duel after the first inning quickly became a battle of the bats after BW (13-3) scored two runs in the second inning followed by a run from Westminster (5-9) in the bottom of the frame. Each squad added a run in the sixth inning, but the Brown and Gold were able to shut out the Titans the rest of the way to win the team's 10th of their last 11. 

Scoring Plays

  • Top 2nd - Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) put the Yellow Jackets on the board with a two-run double
  • Top 6th - Sophomore center fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) made it three straight games with an RBI after a single up the middle

At the Plate

  • Junior second baseman Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) went a team-best 3-for-5 with two singles and a triple
  • Mohnickey Jr. had a game-high two RBIs
  • Junior designated hitter Nathan Zinn (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) had his first multi-hit game as a Yellow Jacket and scored one run
  • Ritlinger-Nirider has also recorded multiple hits in three of his last four games
  • Senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base

On the Mound

  • Senior right-hander Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Baron Collier) got the start going 3.1 innings where he punched out five and allowed one run and two hits  
  • Sophomore left-hander Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) came on to finish the fourth inning and pitched the fifth where he gave up one hit and had one strikeout
  • Senior right-hander Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) struck out one and allowed one run on two hits in two thirds of an inning of work
  • Senior right-hander Matt Sabin (Mentor) finished with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings giving up only one hit
  • Freshman right-hander Jake Heatherington (Bellaire) picked up his third save of the year, now tied for first in the Ohio Athletic Conference, after going three up three down in the ninth

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Saturday, March 23 as they travel to Ada to open the Ohio Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader against Ohio Northern University beginning at 1 p.m. at Wander Field.
