No. 3 Baseball Finishes Snowbird Classic with Win Over Babson (Mass.)

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - The No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Babson (Mass.) College by a score of 15-6 at the Snowbird Classic at Centennial Park #10.

The BW (7-2) bats had four hits and scored six in the second inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead but could not put Babson (1-5) away with a run-rule. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets finished with three runs in the ninth to prevail 15-6

Scoring Plays

  • Top 1st - Senior third baseman Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) got the scoring started with an RBI single
  • Top 2nd - Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) teed off for a two-run homer to dead center
  • Top 2nd - Clark picked up two more RBI after a Beavers error
  • Top 2nd - Senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) doubled to left driving in two runs
  • Top 5th -  Junior designated hitter Nathan Zinn (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) picked up an RBI with a single
  • Top 5th - Mohnickey Jr. made it a two-homer game with two-run shot to right
  • Top 7th - Gelpi went yard to drive in two for the third BW dinger of the day
  • Top 9th - Clark drove in his fourth RBI of the day with a single
  • Top 9th - Junior catcher Eric Coode (Painesville/Mentor) knocked in his first two RBI of the season after another Babson miscue

At the Plate

  • The Yellow Jackets scored a season-best 15 runs and tied a season-best 15 hits
  • Junior left fielder Joey Marousek (North Royalton) had a game-high three hits
  • Clark and Mohnickey Jr. each drove in four runs

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) went 5.1 innings giving up only two runs on eight hits and striking out six for his second win of the season
  • Senior right-hander Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) threw one and two thirds innings alllowing five hits
  • Sophomore left-hander Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) closed the game in the last two innings with three strikeouts and allowing only one hit

The Yellow Jackets conclude their spring break trip tomorrow Sunday, March 10 as they travel to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) College in a Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic doubleheader at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Terry Park Sports Complex.
