Although Richard L. Armstrong '50 came to Baldwin-Wallace College on a basketball scholarship, he earned his reputation for his performances on the football field. Armstrong was named twice to the All-Ohio Team at center. At that time, he also held the B-W football record for most games played with 34.

Following graduation, Armstrong was named head football coach at Centerburg, where he remained until 1954. Armstrong then became the head football coach at Crestline High School before moving to McKinley High in Canton as an assistant coach in 1955. While he coached there, McKinley won the State Championship in 1955 and 1956.

In 1958, Armstrong became assistant coach at North Canton High and earned his M.A. from Akron University at the same time. North Canton named Armstrong their athletic director in 1967. During that year, he was appointed director of the Canton Class AA Basketball Tournament. During that spring, Armstrong directed the district and regional Class AA track meets.

In 1979, Armstrong became the assistant commissioner of the Ohio High School Athletic Association and took on the commissioner position in 1980.

Through his lifelong devotion to athletics, Armstrong has demonstrated his dedication to sports and the youth of Ohio.
