Women’s Tennis Beats Shawnee State, 8-1

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA -- The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin-Wallace College women's tennis team defeated NCAA Division II Shawnee State University, 8-1, this evening (Tuesday, March 6, 2012) in the fifth match of its Annual Spring Break Trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. B-W gained a split today as it lost earlier today to Division II Walsh University.

With its victory, B-W, which has appeared in four of the past five NCAA Division III national tournaments, improved to 4-6 overall, including a 4-1 mark in Hilton Head. Shawnee State is now 1-4 overall.

B-W gained a 3-0 lead in doubles and then won five of six singles matches to win for the fourth time down south.

In singles play, senior No.1 player Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) won by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0, junior No.2 player Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) won by the scores of 6-3 and 6-2, sophomore No.3 player Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) won by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1, junior No.4 player Danielle Rueger (Ashland) won by the scores of 6-1 and 6-1 and freshman No.6 player Rachel Bertrand (Avon) won by the scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

In doubles action, the No.1 duo of Mittler and Baker won by an 8-4 score, the No.2 tandem of Greene and Yoder won by an 8-6 count and the No.3 group of Rueger and senior Emily Brown (Vermilion) won by an 8-5 tally.

With her victory in singles, Mittler has 35 career wins to rank 22nd all-time and Greene, who did not play this morning due to an injury, is now 12th with 48 victories. 

With a win this evening, B-W 28th-year Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy would win his 318th career match.  He is the winningest women's tennis coach in OAC and Ohio collegiate tennis history.  Bethlenfalvy has a 318-205 career mark heading into tonight's match versus Shawnee State.

The B-W women are back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 7 when it plays 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament participant Elizabethtown (Pa.) College at 8:00 a.m. and then ends its trip with a 2:30 p.m. match versus Alvernia (Pa.) College.
