BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed on Saturday, January 10, 2008 at the St. Leo (Fla.) University Invitational at the New Tampa YMCA facility during its annual 10-day winter break training trip in the State of Florida.
The Yellow Jacket men placed first of four teams with 787 points and were followed by the hosts, St. Leo, with 621 points, Florida Southern College with 425 and Mesa State (Colo.) College with 26. The BW women were third of four teams competing with 391 points. Mesa State was first 816 points and followed by Florida Southern with 400 and St. Leo with 381.
Highlighting the day for the men were individual winners in senior distance freestyle specialist Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) and senior breaststroker Nick Gattozzi (Strongsville). Sonnenberg won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.94 seconds and Gattozzi won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:24.84.Sonnenberg also was second in the 1000-yard free and combined with junior Vince Colwell (Parma/ Normandy), sophomore Mike Demitrieff (Parma/ Normandy) and sophomore Ryan Musille (Canton/ GlenOak) to win the 200-yard free relay in 1:32.90.
The women's team did not have any individual winners, but freshmen Danielle Miller (Van Wert) and Jessica McClarren (Bucyrus/ Senior) each recorded a Top-3 finish. Miller was third in the 1000-yard free in 11:45.25 and McClarren was third in the 200-yard breaststroke and posted a time of 2:43.57.
The BW swimmers and divers are back in action this Friday, January 16 when they host Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in the Natatorium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 6:00 p.m. BW also will compete in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Ohio Northern University in Ada at 1:00 p.m.
