BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming teams competed today (Saturday, October 25, 2008) in the Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet opener against OAC rival Mount Union College in the Natatorium in the Lou Higgins Recreation Center.
The Yellow Jacket men defeated the Purple Raider men, 179-58, and the BW women fell to the Mt. Union women, 168-68. With its victory, the Yellow Jacket men are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, and the BW women are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
Highlighting the day for the men was the team's 11 first place finishes, including two each for seniors Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) and Nick Gattozzi (Strongsville). Sonnenberg won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:22.26 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:00.23. Gattozzi won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.41 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.42. Other individual victories for the men included sophomore Ryan Musille (Canton/GlenOak) in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.96 seconds, sophomore Hector Diaz (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral) in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.62, and sophomore Matt Diamond (Ashtabula/Lakeside) in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.59 seconds. Junior Vince Colwell (Parma/Normandy), sophomores Roman Koval (Parma/Padua Franciscan) and Mike Demitrieff (Parma/Normandy) and freshman Nic Null (Shelby/Mansfield St. Peter's) teamed up to win the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:46.95. The team of Colwell, Diaz, Null, and Sonnenberg won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:23.51. Sophomore Todd Richert (North Royalton) won both the one-meter mandatory dive and the one-meter optional dive with 186.70 points and 334.40 points, respectively.
In women's action, senior Kate Ritchey (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) and freshman Jessica MClarren (Bucyrus/Senior) earned individual victories for the Yellow Jackets. Ritchey won the 100 free in 58.79 seconds and McClarren won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:28.74.
The BW swimmers and divers are back in action next Saturday, November 1 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio to compete in another OAC dual meet against Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Center at 1:00 p.m.
