BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams split in a dual meet competition today (Saturday, November 22, 2008) to Oberlin College in the Natatorium of the Lou Higgins Recreation Center in Berea.
The Yellow Jacket men defeated the Yeomen, 147-90, and are 4-1 overall. The BW women lost to the Yeowomen, 124-98, and fell to 1-4 overall.
Highlighting the day for the men were double-winners in senior Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) and sophomore diver Todd Richert (North Royalton), who was last week's Ohio Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week.Sonnenberg won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:16.71 and the 100-yard free in 49.57 seconds.Richert won the 1-meter voluntary dive with a score of 183.50 points and the 1-meter optional dive with 310.95 points.
In addition, senior Nick Gattozzi (Strongsville), junior Vince Colwell (Parma/ Normandy) and sophomoreHector Diaz (El Paso, Texas/ Cathedral) also won events. Gattozzi won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.13. Colwell won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.39 seconds. Diaz won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.87. Finishing the day for the men was its winning 400-yard freestyle relay team composed of sophomoreMatt Diamond (Ashtabula/Lakeside), junior Mark Andrasek (Parma/Normandy), sophomore Mike Demitrieff (Parma/Normandy) and freshman Nic Null (Shelby/Mansfield St. Peter's) with a time of 3:23.88.
Seniors Kelsie Baker (Dover) and diver Alanna Roark (Elyria/Catholic) were the individual winners for the Yellow Jacket women. Baker won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.27 and Roark captured the 1-meter voluntary dive with 111.00 points and 1-meter optional dive with 147.00 points, respectively. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshmen Danielle Miller (Van Wert), Katie Cvelbar (South Euclid/Regina), Jessica LaFave (Beavercreek), and Tara Stitzlein (Millersburg/West Holmes) won in a time of 4:03.14.
The BW swimmers and divers are back in action Thursday, December 5 when they compete in the first day of the three-day Fredonia State University Invitational Meet in Fredonia, New York.
