Baldwin Wallace Men's and Women's Swim Teams Split Against John Carroll in Berea on Seniors' Day

BEREA, OHIO - Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference pick Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) and sophomore All-American diver Todd Richert (North Royalton) set school records as the Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 144.50-98.50, today (Saturday, January 24, 2009) at the Natatorium inside the Lou Higgins Recreation Center in Berea. The women lost, 157-82.

With its win, the BW men improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC, while the women dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.

Sonnenberg was a double winner, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:08.11, which broke his own school record of 10:13.77 set last year, and the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:58.40. Richert broke two of his records with his victories in the one-meter voluntary dive and the one-meter optional dive.  Richert's scores of 199.45 in the voluntary and 318.40 in the optional broke records he set last season of 194.48 and 311.03.

Other individual winners for the BW men were senior Nick Gattozzi (Strongsville), juniors Jordan Irwin (Westerville/Westerville/ South) and Vince Colwell (Parma/ Normandy), and sophomores Hector Diaz (El Paso, Texas/ Cathedral) and Matt Diamond (Ashtabula/ Lakeside).  Gattozzi won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:04.17. Irwin took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.90, Colwell won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.14, Diaz won the 200-yard IM in 2:06.71, and Diamond was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.04. The 200-yard medley relay team of Colwell, Diamond, and sophomores Roman Koval (Parma/ Padua Franciscan) and Ryan Musille (Canton/ GlenOak) won in a time of 1:42.56.The women's team was led by freshman Jessica McClarren (Bucyrus/ Senior), who won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.22.  The 200-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of seniors Kate Ritchey (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport), Kelly Frahlich (Stow/Stow-Monroe Falls) and Kelsie Baker (Dover) and freshman Tara Stitzlein (Millersburg/West Holmes), won in a time of 1:51.26.

The BW swimmers and divers are back in action next Saturday, Jan. 31 when they travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania to take on Allegheny College at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets also host the 2009 OAC Championship Meet on Thursday through Saturday, February 19-21 at the University of Akron.
