BW Drops Gold Bowl Game to No. 8 John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University football team was defeated by Ohio Athletic Conference rival and No.8-nationally ranked John Carroll University by a final score of 45-7 in the 26th Annual Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Game on Wasmer Field at Don Shula Stadium.

With the Gold Bowl victory, John Carroll (3-0, 2-0 OAC) has won two straight games in the series with BW (1-2, 0-2 OAC).  The Blue Streaks tied the all-time series at 24-24-4 and the Gold Bowl series at 13-13.

John Carroll scored 14 in the first, 17 in the second, seven in the third and seven in the fourth.  The Yellow Jackets scored its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter.   The Blue Streaks outgained BW in total offense 509-215.

The Yellow Jackets were led on offense by junior quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas) as he completed 11 of 28 passes for113 yards with two interceptions.  Moeglin also led the rushing attack with 37 yards on 17 attempts.  Senior wide receiver Kyle Dunne (Rocky River) reeled in five passes for 71 yards.  Senior defensive back Austin Cordova (Perry) led the defense with 11 tackles.  Senior free safety Devonte Greer (Columbus/Mifflin) and senior defensive end Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River) each had six tackles and a fumble recovery. Riemenschneider recorded the lone BW sack.

John Carroll was led by senior quarterback Mark Meyers as he completed 22 of 34 passes for 374 yards and five touchdowns while not playing in the fourth quarter.  Marshall Howell caught five passes for 112 yards and two TDS.  Tommy Michaels rushed for 61 yards on 15 carries.  Jimmy King led three other Blue Streaks with five tackles while he had one of two John Carroll interceptions.

In the first quarter, the Blue Streaks scored on two Meyers touchdowns of 60 and 23-yards each going to Howell.  Kresimir Ivkovic converted both extra point attempts.

In the second quarter, John Carroll scored on two Meyers touchdowns of 11 and eight-yards. Brian Kornowski caught the 11-yard TD and Zach Strippy hauled in the eight-yard score.  Ivkovic connected on a 38-yard field goal and added both extra points.

In the third quarter, the Blue Streaks scored on a Meyers touchdown pass of 23-yards to Brendan Carozzoni.  Ivkovic tacked on the extra point.

In the fourth quarter, John Carroll scored on an Arin Pruitt two-yard touchdown.  Ivkovic tacked on the extra point. Sophomore quarterback Robbie Plagens (Rocky River) scored the lone Yellow Jacket touchdown as he leaped over the pile for the one-yard TD.  Sophomore Joe Simonis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) added the extra-point.
