Moeglins' Four TDS Lead BW Past Muskingum on Homecoming

BEREA, Ohio – Junior quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Canton/ St. Thomas Aquinas) threw three touchdown passes and rushed for one to lead the Baldwin Wallace University football team to a 35-7 victory against Muskingum University before 3,129 fans on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Homecoming.  BW (2-2, 1-2 OAC), who has now won nine straight games against the  Muskingum (1-3, 1-2 OAC), led 7-0 after one quarter, 14-7 at halftime and 21-7 after three stanzas. With its win, BW increased its all-time series advantage against that began in 1917 to 43-13-2.

The Yellow Jackets were led on offense by Moeglin who completed 14 of 24 passes for 161 yards with three TDS. He also rushed for 49 yards on nine carries with one score. The running attack was led by junior running back Issaac Reed (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh) rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries.  Reed also caught one pass for 20-yards and a TD.  The receivers were led by senior Kyle Dunne (Rocky River) caught seven passes for 87 yards and two TDS. The defense was led by sophomore linebacker John McElfresh (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) had a game-high tying 10 tackles.  Four players with seven tackles including the Frank Roppolo Player of the Game in senior All-OAC defensive end Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River), who also added a Finnie Stadium record 86-yard fumble recovery for touchdown.

Muskingum was led on offense by junior running back Melvin Smith who rushed 106 yards on 18 carries with one TD.  Junior quarterback Cody Williams completed 2 of 6 passes for 21 yards.  Sophomore defensive back Brandon Walker recorded a game-high tying 10 tackles.

In the first quarter, BW gained a 7-0 lead when Riemenschneider picked up a loose ball and rambled for Finnie Stadium record 86-yards to the end zone at the 5:44 mark. Sophomore placekicker Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) added the PAT kick.

In the second quarter, the Fighting Muskies tied the game at 7-7 when Smith scored on a 1-yard run at the 13:27 mark to cap a 7-play and 77-yard drive in 7:17. Sophomore PK Cody Dent added the PAT boot.

BW gained a 14-7 lead at 7:38 when Moeglin tossed a 22-yard TD pass to Dunne and Simonis added the PAT boot. The play came one after sophomore cornerback Alex Garrett (Fairlawn/ Copley) recovered a Muskingum fumble.

In the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored the lone points of the period when Moeglin scrambled for a nine-yard run with 4:05 remaining.  Simonis tacked on the PAT.

In the fourth quarter, BW put the game away with two TD passes from Moeglin to Reed and Dunne.   Reed's score came on a 20-yard screen pass and Dunne's score was from seven yards out.  Simonis booted both PATs.

BW returns to action next Saturday, October 11 when it travels to Marietta for an OAC game against Marietta College at a 1 p.m. game.  The Yellow Jackets next play at home on Saturday, Oct. 25 versus Otterbein University on Professor Appreciation Day at 1:30 p.m.
